It is HOT!!! But homestead chores still must be done

Posted by Heather Wiegel on

I may have a very mini city homestead lifestyle, but it doesn't mean the workload ever ends.

I still dehydrate, can, make scratch breads and jams/jellies, etc. Still do needlework. I make hay of a sort - only in the city it's called "mowing the yard." I stockpile.

Right now, it's rather warm, because this is the season we in Michigan tend to call the corn sweats. The corn is just about "knee high by the 4th of July," and over the next two or three weeks, it will offgas a LOT of moisture, which makes it humid and sticky. So we all sweat up a storm outside. Natives are used to it. Those from other cultures think it's worse than their 110 degree heat indices that are dryer.

No thanks, I'd rather sweat, at least then I remember to hydrate frequently. Plus sweating cools you off, so if I have to be outside for even half an hour and I work up a sweat as I just did mowing half the yard, it is hot and I and the mower batteries need to cool off and recharge.

I may or may not get out and do some brush trimming after dinner, depends on how much I want to get out and doordash and make a few bucks over trimming the brush, too. Honestly, I'd rather make the money, lol. Typical homesteader, I find every way I can to make moolah.

The shop is slowly porting over from Etsy, which is fine. I'm not too rushed on it right now because I haven't got loads of traffic just yet. Give it a month or so, haha.

Evening fun "chores," or "cheers" as a dear elderly homesteader friend of mine calls them, for the next few months are Christmas presents for Mom and Aunt Liz, and an afghan for me. A shopping tote for Mom, dishclothes for Aunt Liz, and a scrapghan worked in seed stitch for me. Right now, I'm honestly beat to heck. But not too much longer and the yard will be done, then dinner (spaghetti), and maybe some DDing for a last few bucks this week towards bills.

If you gotta be out in this heat, be careful. Stay hydrated, wear loose clothing that's comfy, and take frequent hydration/catch you breath breaks. Better to have things take longer than normal, over you having heat stroke!
